Fresh Plaza, Japanese artist Keisuke Yamada has earned a cult following after posting pictures of his banana sculptures online. Subjects of his pieces include Marge Simpson, Davy Jones from Pirates Of The Caribbean and Elvis Presley. Another of his works is the holiday banana, seen reclining under a palm tree on a deck chair with a cocktail in his hand.
His latest batch also includes some more forgettable attempts to recreate Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge. But Mr Yamada doesn’t just draw inspiration from famous faces and fictional characters. He has had a stab at classical figures including a banana version of the Greek sea god Poseidon.
In one of the artist’s more elaborate inventions, the god is seen in an imperious pose surrounded by banana horses and holding his sceptre. The 23-year-old has no room for slip-ups, however – he has to complete each piece in about half an hour before the bananas start to rot.
He said: ‘It began when I thought it might be interesting to carve a face into the fruit. The first was the face of someone with a smile. I was surprised by
how many people liked it.’ He uses a toothpick and spoon to conjure up the fruity creations, takes a photograph – and then eats them.
