After having their fill with iPhones and iPads, city technophiles are now looking forward to the UbiSlate. The notebook-cum-mobile phone has been termed as “the dream tablet” and is an upgraded version of the Central government’s Aakash. Even before hitting the markets, UbiSlate has seen record pre-bookings and with a price tag of Rs 2999 (a 16GB iPad 3G costs roughly Rs 37,000), making it ideal for students and young professionals. “I planned to buy the Aakash tablet but realised that it had already been sold out and the company had the upgraded version available. I booked two UbiSlate tablets. It has all the features of the iPad or for that matter any of the smart phone available in the market and since the price is very affordable, it is bound to be sold out in no time,” says Vishal Jain, an employee at a bank. While Aakash has already been declared as sold out by Datawind, an important attraction for buyers is that Internet will be available at Rs 99 for 2 GB. The touch-screen android tablet offers WiFi connectivity and support for optional 3G modems while integrated USB ports allow pen-drives, external keyboards, web-cams, dongles and other peripherals to be attached. “I have booked the UbiSlate tablet after seeing the features offered for such a nominal price. A large number of my friends too have booked it, some for their family members and some for themselves. It’s like a dream deal no one wants to miss,” says techie Anjali T.
