At a conference under the theme “Cities of the World” held in Stockholm, it was stated that the experience of “Skolkovo” in Russia could have an influence on the future of major world cities.The problem of city organization has been of serious concern to specialists all over the world, and in this connection, the experience of “Skolkovo”, situated outside Moscow, can become very useful. One of the major problems of modern cities is their multiple functions. They contain apartment buildings, production infrastructures and public buildings, as well as resorts and leisure parks. “Skolkovo” is conceived precisely as such a symbiosis. It will contain a university, a techno-park, research center clusters, offices of large companies and guest zones. All the facilities are to be interconnected. The techno-park will recruit staff to work in the clusters of biomedicine, IT, energy efficiency, nuclear technology, space technology and telecommunications. The clusters themselves are to carry out several functions, the main ones being the development of new technologies and the training of future specialists. The university’s programme will focus on the priorities. Interconnectedness of facilities is new in the Russian and global practice of city building, and hence it faces some difficulties, says Seda Pumpyanskaya, vice president of the “Skolkovo” Foundation, speaking in an interview for VOR.
