Bhopal Gas TragedyEasy Destination Blog, By: Mayank Gupta: The victims of Bhopal gas tragedy have started to appeal Indian tourists to boycott London Olympics. Gas victims are angry with Dow Chemicals sponsoring LondonOlympics and therefore urges Indian tourists to support their cause.Since the revelation, Bhopal gas tragedy victims, Madhya Pradeshgovt, NGO's and several prominent athelets in India have reacted very sharply. The IOC has ruled out the possibility of boycotting theBhopal Gas Tragedy
games at the same time London Olympic Committee has made it quite clear that it does not care about the victims and their sentiments. This has lead some victims demanding Indians to boycott London Olympics. They have asked fellow Indians not to visit London for the games. While the voices of tourist boycott are on small scale, they are increasing by the day. If Indian government does not takes any stand, NGO's and victims may very well agitate and ask Indian tourists to boycott the games. Considering the patriotic wave in India thanks to Anna Hazare, its quite possible that thousands of Indian tourists may respond to the calls. According to tour operators, if the demand intensified, Indians may boycott the games in protest. This would be very devastating for UK Tourism.Tourism Officials is largely focusing on Indian and Chinese tourists for the London Games. If Indian tourists decides to boycott the Olympics, it could make matter worse for London tourism. Already several tourism survey have suggested that London may not get as many tourists as expected by the UK. The upcoming few weeks would suggest the mood of Indian tourists and whether they will boycott the games or not. Dow Chemicals happens to be the company that owns Union Carbide which is held responsible for the tragedy that killed over 25,000 people and injured 558,125. It is estimated that around 200,000 people received permanent injuries due to the incident. Dow Chemicals although has paid sum of $2,200 each to the families of the dead. While Dow Chemicals claims that it has completed all the oblegations, NGO's in India thinks otherwise. They have time and time again accused Dow Chemicals for ignoring its responsibilities regarding the enviornmental impact. The sum paid by the company is also very little according to the victims and NGO's who have demanded additional billions of dollars that Dow Chemicals has refused to pay. Source: Easy Destination Blog
