Tendulkar, Rekha recommended for Rajya Sabha membership

News Bullet, STAR News Bureau, New Delhi: Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and actress of yesteryear Rekha are among four eminent persons who have been recommended for nomination as members of Rajya Sabha. Earlier, Congress has proposed to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar that he be party's nominee to Rajya Sabha. The proposal was made to Sachin on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Sachin and his wife Anjali met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi. Officially the meeting was to invite Sonia for the upcoming matches of Mumbai Indians. On the proposal, there is no official comment from Sachin as it is understood that he will take some time before arriving at any decision. Sachin's wife Anjali Tendulkar arrives at 10 Janpath to meet Sonia Gandhi.Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent a communication to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday which has been sent to President Pratibha Patil for notification, sources said. Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service. Sonia wanted to meet the batting great and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic feat of scoring 100 international centuries recently. Senior BCCI functionary and IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla was also present at Sonia Gandhi's residence. According to sources, Tendulkar and his wife spent close to half an hour with Sonia. Tendulkar, who turned 39 on Tuesday, had to wait for more than one year to move from 99 hundreds to the landmark 100th century before finally achieving it in an Asia Cup match against Bangladesh on March 16. BJP has welcomed the move of the government. There are reports that the government may ask President to nominate Sachin as Rajya Sabha member as five seats are vacant in the house. Rekha Former cricketers Saba Karim and Vinod Kambli welcomed the proposal and told STAR News that Sachin's nomination to Rajya Sabha will help cricket and sports at large. Saba Karim felt that the kind of stature Sachin has held for over twenty years, he can use the same for the welfare of the masses. Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha has come as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. Many experts and observers feel that Sachin is actively involved in playing cricket and may not accept the offer. They point out that he has been a most apolitical person and not even been associated with a political cause. Although, he is going to be nominated but the fact will remain that the Congress has recommended his name. Sachin should get into Rajya Sabha after his retirement: Ashoke Pandit Director Ashoke Pandit tweeted about the proposed Rajya Sabha nomination of Sachin Tendulkar. He said, "Sachin shd be and surely he is intelligent enough not to get used by political parties.Cong.offers him RS seat & BJP Bharat Ratna." His other tweets on Sachin are as follows: "Sachin will fail if he bats for Congress in Rajya Sabha. His image of an apolitical sportsman will be tarnished.", "Sachin Tendulkars entry into Rajya Sabha is the end of his Cricket carrier.", "Sachin tendulkar shd get into Rajya Sabha after his retirement from cricket.", "Does Sachin Tendulkar want to associate with those who have looted the country with so many scams.", "By getting Sachin Tendulkar in Rajya Sabha it will not help Congress in any way." - with PTI inputs, Source: News Bullet,
