‘Kash koi aisa manzar hota, tumhara sir mere kandhe pe hota’, with this number the ghazal maestro Hariharan began his performance at the open auditorium of Lalitha Kala Thoranam on the Saturday evening. Needless to say he held the audience spellbound for more than two hours. Hyderabadi audience was not behind and was cheering, blowing whistles and applauding his performance. The Ghazal Nite was organised by SEW Foundation and Sangam Academy to felicitate Vittal Rao, ghazal singer from the city. Hariharan, pioneer of Indian fusion, continued with gazals ‘Bahot bechain hai dil, tum jaha bhi ho chale aao’ and ‘Suhani rat phir dene lagi lori jamane ki’. Audience started to clap once the singer began with his next ‘Aks chehare pe aftab ka hai, esi elake me ghar janab ka hai’. Inspired by audience’s response, the singer asked audience to sing a few ‘soors’ with him and sung ‘Aahade masti hai log kehate hai, me parasti hai log kehate
hai’. While presenting his next ‘Ham jaha ji rahe hai marmar ke..’, he elaborated how in every city people have to go through hardships. “In Mumbai, it is hot climate and it is hard work in Hyderabad,” the singer said. His next, written by Salim Kausar ‘Me khayal hoo kisi aur ka, muze chahta ha koi aur hai’ also won a huge round of applause. By this time, the audience began to demand particular gazalas like Sharab, songs from the movie Roja. Then he presented popular gazals ‘Suna hai vo hame bhulane lage hai, to kya ham unhe yad aane lage hai’ and ‘Muze vo phir yad aane lage hai, jinhe bhulane ko barso lage hai’. “There is a difference of words and style in songs and gazals,” explained Hariharan, who has sung in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam, Kannada and Bhojpuri. On audience’s demand, he presented a song from Roja movie, a Telugu song. Attendees expressed their happiness with whistle and cheers when the singer began his famous gazal onJam. He finished with another song from the movie Roja.Source: The Hans India
