ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array), the world’s largest radio telescope has become operational in the observatory in the Atacama desert in the north of Chile. The telescope is a milestone of the project on creating one of the most advanced observatories in the world. Its construction began in 2003. ALMA is able to capture the light of the universe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, about a thousand times longer than the wavelengths of visible light. The observation of these long wavelengths allow astronomers to study very cold objects in space, such as the thick clouds of cosmic dust and gas where stars and planets are being formed and also very distant objects of the early universe.Source: Voice of Russia
