New treatment for prostate cancer 90% effective, British researchers say

By Monakhova Yulia, British scientists have completed a research that proposes new treatment for prostate cancer. This treatment, known as focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), provides almost perfect results: nine out of ten patients are cancer free for 12 months after minimum invasive surgical procedure. The research was conducted by a team led by Professor Mark Emberton from University College London Hospitals. They were the first to use HIFU to treat small areas of cancerous cells in a day case surgical procedure. Today treatment of prostate cancer involves either radiotherapy or surgery, which both cause damage to surrounding cancer healthy tissue. Traditional treatment provides 50% chance of perfect outcome, meaning that half of the patients will have significant side effects such as incontinence and impotence. The study proved that with HIFU 90% of patients will undergo successful removal of cancer without the side effects.
