SEOUL, KOREA - As the Brazil World Cup comes close in mid-June, large-sized TVs over 50 inches, particularly high-resolution UHD TVs, are gaining ever-rising popularity. According to HI-Mart on May 15, the sales of 50-inch-plus large TVs marked a 25-percent growth over the past one month, compared to a year ago, with their share in overall TV sales rising to 45 percent from 35 percent.HI-Mart said that this reflects the potential demand for large TVs ahead of such global sports event. The share of UHD TVs in total 50-inch-plus TV sales, which hovered below 10 percent in the latter half of last year, showed an upward trend starting from early this year. The share of UHD TVs broke the 30-percent mark in March and reached the 40-percent level in May after temporarily dipping to the 20-percent level in April due to the effect of the sinking of the ferry Sewol. Considering that the Brazil World Cup game live casts will continue toward the end of July, the special demand for large premium TVs is expected to increase at least until the end of June.
