Junior assistant arrested with unaccounted cash


  • GUWAHATI, Nov 11: In a surprise raid conducted by anti-corruption officials in connection with the recently unearth Rs 2,250 crore scam in the Assam Social Welfare department, a junior assistant working in the Directorate of Social Welfare at Uzan Bazar in the city was arrested for keeping unaccounted cash in his vehicle. He has been identified as Manabendra Dutta.
  • Rs 5 lakh was seized in the anti-corruption raid from Dutta’s Alto car (AS 01 MB 6707). He was arrested after three hours of interrogation at the Directorate. Raids were also conducted at his home in the evening.
  • The recent revelation of massive irregularities of over Rs 150 crore per year by the Social Welfare Department for the last 15 years has shocked the people of the State. During the process of investigation, it was unearthed that in the name of feeding 9 lakh ‘ghost’ or non-existent children, corrupt officials of this department and willing contractors funneled off a whopping 2,250 crore.
  • Similarly, 390 fake Anganwadi centers have been identified, which had been fraudulently entered for siphoning off government welfare funds. As a result of these detections, monthly expenditure required for Supplementary Nutrition Programme meant for mothers and children has been brought down drastically, revealed the probe. Source: The Sentinel
