Siberian scientists develop laser scanner to detect minuscule traces of explosives

The new method is so effective it can detect explosive traces left on a hand even after 100 handshakes. The device is designed for use in detecting traces of explosives in vehicles, in carry-on luggage and also in cargo.

Its makers say the laser detector has been tested by experts from Russia's Interior Ministry, and underwent trials at a railway station in Tomsk.

The system was developed as a collaborative venture by the Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics in Tomsk and Institute for Problems of Chemical & Energetic Technologies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Biysk.

The project was coordinated by the Federal Security Service (FSB).

'Together we worked on the device and tested it,' said Olga Tikhomirova, of the institute, which is part of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
