John Kerry, the former secretary of state during Barack Obama’s term, will be seen playing a key role in the US president-elect Joe Biden’s administration. He will be appointed as the new president’s climate envoy, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, the BBC reported, quoting the Biden camp, on Monday.
According to the report, Biden could choose Anthony Blinken, a top US diplomat, as Secretary of State. Janet Yellen, the former head of the US Federal Reserve, could be seen as Treasury Secretary.
The news comes hours before President Donald Trump ordered the transfer of power.
Biden, who is on the verge of going to the White House, could announce a possible cabinet on Tuesday. The Democrat leader wants to build a smart administration to highlight the strong position of the United States to the world.
In a statement, Biden said he needed a team that was ready from “Day-One” to assist him in restoring America’s position. However, Biden cannot appoint all ministers. Some posts have to be appointed on the recommendation of the upper house of Congress, Senate as per the rules.
The Biden administration wants to give full attention to the issue of global climate change, in line with Democrats’ election manifesto – and John Kerry is being chosen as the president’s special envoy in this regard.
Kerry signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016 on behalf of the United States. The countries, under the agreement, agreed to work together to reduce global warming.The Trump administration later pulled out of the agreement.
