Thousands of farmers of India, mainly from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, who have been protesting for the last 12 days at various border points of Delhi against the new farm laws today intensify their protests and call for Bharat Bandh, nationwide bandh.
The farmers have blocked key roads during their 'chakka jam' protest from 11 am to 3 pm as part of their stir. The Bharat Bandh mainly have been called by farmer unions in protest of the Centre's three farm laws.
A joint statement has issued in support of Tuesday's "Bharat bandh" by opposition leaders from several parties, including the Congress, the DMK, the RJD, the Samajwadi Party, the newly-minted People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration in J&K, and a collection of Left outfits.
In their statement the opposition leaders said "(we) extend our solidarity with the ongoing massive struggle by Indian farmers... and support their call for a 'Bharat bandh' on December 8, demanding the withdrawal of retrograde agri-laws and the Electricity Amendment Bill".
"These new agri-laws passed in the Parliament in a brazen (and) anti-democratic manner (by) preventing a structured discussion and voting, threaten India's food security, destroy Indian agriculture and our farmers, lay the basis for the abolishment of MSP and mortgage Indian agriculture and our markets to the caprices of multi-national agri-business corporates," the statement said.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the DMK's MK Stalin have all signed this statement.
However, Home Minister Amit Shah will meet representatives of farmers at 7 p.m. in Delhi to discuss reforms in India's agriculture market that have sparked protests leading to nationwide shutdown on Tuesday, according to PTI. "We do not want to cause any inconvenience to anyone from Delhi or Haryana, we should be allowed to hold protest at Ramlila Ground," RS Mansa, Punjab Kisan Union at Singhu, said.
