After a long wait, the United Kingdom has finally started a large-scale Covid-19 vaccination program. As part of this, 90-year-old Margaret Keenan became the first citizen of the country to be vaccinated.
The Covid-19 vaccine, invented by US pharmaceutical company Pfizer, arrived in the UK on Thursday after receiving an emergency clearance. From then on, the waiting period started and the desired time was eventually met. For the first time in the world, the COVID vaccine program was started in the United Kingdom.
Margaret received the Covid-19 vaccine at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire this morning, local time. She was given a dose of COVID vaccine by injection.
The woman, hailed from the town of Enniskillen in Northern Ireland, has lived in Coventry for nearly 70 years. She used to work in a jewelry store and retired when she was 86-years-old. She is basically at high risk of being the most affected by the COVID, as a result, the elders are being vaccinated earlier.
“Being the first person to be vaccinated makes me feel special,” said Margaret after taking the vaccine.
Her birthday will be a few days later, she informed, saying: “It is the best prize before the birthday”
Health workers, people over the age of 80 and care home workers are being vaccinated as COVID’s frontrunners in the first phase under the vaccination program at about 70 hospitals in the UK on Tuesday, local authorities said.
It is hoped that people will be able to return to normal life after getting vaccinated.
Pfizer’s COVID vaccine arrived in Britain from Belgium on Thursday. Earlier on Wednesday, the UK government issued an emergency clearance for the vaccine. However, the British government kept the whole process of vaccination a secret at first.
