The European countries have begun imposing travel bans on the United Kingdom after the discovery of a new coronavirus strain, which is 70 percent more infectious, spreading in Britain.
Meanwhile, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Belgium have canceled flights with the UK at various times. Besides, Austria, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Turkey have also announced the shutdown of flights.
The British media outlet BBC reported the information on Monday.
A European Union meeting is scheduled to held in the morning. A decision will be made on joint action in this regard.
The new coronavirus strain is spreading rapidly in London and south-east England, according to British health officials. Strong lockdowns were suddenly imposed across London and large parts of south-east England on Saturday amid serious concerns.
Hours after the announcement, the Netherlands suspended flights to the United Kingdom until January 1. Passengers on the ferries were also barred from entering. However, cargo can be transported or aviated.
France, however, has announced a 48-hour shutdown of all land and air transport where thousands of lorries ply between the two countries every day.
Italy has announced the shutdown of all flights with the United Kingdom until January 8 as the new coronavirus strain was discovered in the UK.
Ireland has a significant number of passengers traveling with the UK at this time of year, however, the Irish government has announced that flights from England, Wallace and Scotland will be banned for 48 hours from midnight.
“In the interests of public health, the people of Britain should not travel to Ireland by air or sea,” the Irish government said in a statement.
Austria has announced a ban on various flights from the United Kingdom. Bulgaria has suspended all flights to and from the UK from midnight.
