Htike Zaw, a newly elected member of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), shot dead by gunman on Saturday
A newly elected member of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) Htike Zaw has been shot dead by a gunman in front of his home in Kyaukme in Shan state on Saturday.
NLD spokesman Myo Nunt said Zaw, a local MP from the NLD Party, was sitting in his shop next to his house. At that time, an unknown person suddenly appeared there as a customer. The miscreant, later, started firing randomly. Zhao was shot on the spot. He was later declared dead at the hospital.
Meanwhile, after the news of this horrific incident spread, tension spread in the whole area. Curfews have been imposed in many places for fear of renewed unrest.
Myanmar’s ruling party has strongly condemned the killings, calling this a “politically motivated killing” and promised to arrest the culprit immediately and punish him severely. However, no comment has been received from the police so far.
It is learned that the NLD has condemned the post-election killings as political violence and called for a speedy investigation.It is to be noted that the general election was held on 8 November in Myanmar.
