US cuts troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

U.S. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien says his country has ordered troops from Iraq and Afghanistan to reduce their numbers. “Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller had issued the order” – he told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Miller was recently replaced by US President Donald Trump after he fired former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. The country’s media reports say that Esper was “opposed to reducing” the number of US troops from Afghanistan.

“The number of US troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan would be reduced to 5,000 by 15 January 2021 as per the direction by the Secretary of Defense,” the U.S. National Security Adviser also said.

He added that there are currently 4,500 US troops in Afghanistan and 3,200 in Iraq. “At the behest of Christopher Miller, the number of US troops stationed in Afghanistan has been reduced from 4,500 to 2,500 and the number of troops deployed in Iraq has been reduced from 3,200 to 2,500,” said Robert O’Brien.O’Brien further said the remaining US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan would be responsible for securing US embassies and other facilities in those countries. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com/
