US FDA grants emergency approval to Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday granted the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine by issuing an emergency authorization to use, paving the way for its forthcoming rollout across the country.

FDA’s chief scientist Denise Hinton wrote in a letter to the Pfizer executive: “I am authorizing the emergency use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19.” – reports AFP, Al Jazeera.

According to Al Jazeera, the decision came after a regulatory process that involved a panel of independent advisors weighing in on the safety of a two-dose COVID vaccine for the use of people aged 16 and older.

The US officials and medical experts are hoping that the vaccine will help the pandemic under control.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump praised the development as a “medical miracle”, adding that the first vaccine will be applied in the next 24 hours.

“This is one of the greatest scientific accomplishments in history. It will save millions of lives and end the pandemic once and for all,” he said.

More than 302,750 people died and more than 16.3 million have been infected in the US on Friday, according to worldometers - a frightening pace that medical officials have said is likely to continue in the coming months.Source: AFP, Al Jazeera Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com/
