Facebook owner Meta to face more lawsuits in Japan over fake ads

Tokyo, October (IANS): Facebook and Instagram owner Meta Platforms Inc. will face fresh lawsuits in Japan over advertisements that fraudulently solicited investment funds with fake endorsements from celebrities, local media reported.

Around 30 plaintiffs will seek at least 300 million yen (about $2 million) from the US technology giant and its Japanese arm, arguing they failed to do enough to prevent the scams, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday, citing lawyers for the plaintiffs.

The damages suits will be filed with five district courts across the country, including Saitama, Chiba, and Osaka, the report said.

Among the names of noted people used in the adverts are Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa, founder of online fashion retailer Zozo Inc., the report added.

The plaintiffs viewed the fake advertisements before being directed to transfer money to designated investment accounts, the lawyers said, arguing that Meta is obliged to investigate the content of adverts and not allow them to be posted on social media if it can foresee the risk of harm to users, Xinhua news agency reported.

Meta was sued earlier this year in a similar suit filed in Kobe by a group of four people.

The company is seeking dismissal of the damages claim of 23 million yen ($150,500). Source: https://www.morungexpress.com/facebook-owner-meta-to-face-more-lawsuits-in-japan-over-fake-ads

Sweden moves to lift uranium mining ban

Sweden's Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari has announced the launch of an investigation to abolish the country's ban on uranium mining. The move was welcomed by Australia-based Aura Energy, which hopes to extract uranium as a by-product from its 100%-owned Häggån polymetallic project in Sweden.

On 16 May 2018, the Swedish parliament passed an amendment to the Environmental Code banning uranium exploration and mining in the country. As from 1 August that year, no permits for uranium exploration or mining have been issued for any such applications submitted from that date.

There is currently no uranium mining in Sweden, which has six nuclear power reactors providing about one-third of its electricity. Sweden imports most of its nuclear fuel, including all enrichment services.

The investigation - to be carried out by the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise - will determine what rule changes are needed to enable and clarify the conditions for uranium extraction. In addition, it will analyse whether the requirement for the government's admissibility review should be limited to cover uranium mining only when it is a nuclear activity.

The ministry said the purpose of the investigation is "to remove a ban that is not needed". "Extraction of uranium must be handled in the same way as extraction of other metals, where the environmental assessment determines the conditions under which it can be permitted," it noted. "Uranium often occurs together with other metals and today must be sorted out and handled as waste."

"If the European Union is to become the first climate-neutral continent, access to sustainable metals and minerals must be ensured," Pourmokhtari said. "We need to use the uranium we have, instead of sorting it out and considering it as waste, as is the case now - due to the current ban on mining uranium."

The Ministry of Climate and Enterprise noted that more than one-quarter of Europe's known resources of uranium are found in Sweden's bedrock. "Today, it is not possible to grant either an exploration permit, a processing concession or an environmental permit regarding uranium. Uranium mining must in future be tested according to relevant environmental legislation, which means that the current ban on uranium mining must be removed."

The result of the investigation must be reported by 15 May at the latest, at which point the government can choose to proceed with a legislative proposal to parliament to lift the ban on uranium mining.

In November last year, Sweden's parliament approved a bill that cleared the way for new nuclear power in the country by removing the current limit on the number of nuclear reactors in operation, as well as allowing reactors to be built on new sites. The amendment entered into force on 1 January.

Sweden currently uses 2.4 million pounds U3O8 annually in its three nuclear power plants and has committed to building two additional nuclear reactors by 2035.
Aura welcomes investigation

In 2019, Aura Energy lodged a claim against the Swedish government for compensation for the financial loss resulting from the ban on uranium exploration and mining, introduced the previous year. The company had planned to extract uranium as a by-product from its 100%-owned Häggån polymetallic project in Sweden.

Häggån, previously known as Storsjon, is located in the municipality of Berg in the county of Jämtland and forms part of a large uranium field in central Sweden. Figures released in mid-2012 estimated resources of 800 million pounds U3O8 (307,718 tU) at Häggån, making the Swedish project the second largest undeveloped uranium resource in the world, Aura says. The uranium occurs with molybdenum, vanadium and zinc in black shales, and Aura has reported yields of up to 85% uranium from bioheap leaching tests.

In February 2013, Aura announced it had accepted Areva Mines as strategic partner in the project and had entered a binding cooperation agreement, but Areva later pulled out of this.

Welcoming the prospect of the uranium mining ban now being lifted, Aura said Häggån has the potential to supply a significant portion of Sweden's nuclear fuel requirements.

"This announcement is a logical step by the Swedish government towards allowing the extraction of uranium domestically to secure its own and others' needs," said Aura Energy CEO Andrew Grove. "It is the start of a process which I hope will result in new legislation that not only makes it legally possible to mine uranium, but also provides a predictable permit process for uranium extraction alongside the mining of other metals.

"The Swedish government's stated aim aligns well with the ability to mine domestic uranium, reducing foreign dependency and strengthening domestic and European energy supply," he added. "It is of course essential that uranium is mined in a way that does not threaten the local environment or water supply, and I am certain that we will be able to demonstrate that within the framework of the Swedish permit process."

The company intends to file for processing concession for Häggån K1 during 2024 with the Swedish Mining Inspectorate. A Swedish processing concession (exploitation permit) is valid for 25 years.Researched and written by World Nuclear News  Sweden moves to lift uranium mining ban : Uranium & Fuel - World Nuclear News

Tunisia detains cartoonist over drawings mocking prime minister

Tunisian cartoonist Tawfiq Omrane
Tunisia’s public prosecutor yesterday detained the cartoonist Tawfiq Omrane over drawings mocking the prime minister, Omrane’s lawyer said, Reuters reported.

Omrane is well known for publishing satirical cartoons featuring President Kais Saied, who seized almost all powers two years ago after he shut down Tunisia’s elected parliament in a move that the opposition described as a coup.

“The police interrogated him [Omrane] for hours without the presence of lawyers on suspicion of insulting through social networks … over cartoons mocking the prime minister,” his lawyer, Anas Kadoussi, said. Kadoussi said the cartoonist could face one year in prison if convicted.

Interior Ministry officials declined to comment immediately.

In a Facebook update posted at 1pm GMT Omrane said he had been released.

Many Tunisians see free speech as a principal reform won after the 2011 revolution that toppled dictatorial President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. But activists, journalists and politicians have warned this freedom is under threat.

“Omrane’s arrest reinforces authorities’ efforts to suppress critical voices of the president,” said Amira Mohamed, a senior official at the country’s Journalists’ Syndicate.

Saied strongly criticised state TV in a speech this week, including the arrangement of headlines in a bulletin, in a move that the Journalists Syndicate said was “blatant interference”.

Saied rejects accusations of targeting freedoms and has said he will never be a dictator.Police have detained more than 20 political figures this year, including opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi, head of Ennahda party, accusing some of plotting against state security. Tunisia detains cartoonist over drawings mocking prime minister

Corona to Marona! Depositors of Adarsh demand Rs 5000 cr package

Social media is flooded with posts of helpless depositors of the beleaguered Adarsh Credit Cooperative, which demand, among other things an immediate relief package. In the name of investigation, it is not appropriate to leave 21 lakh members to die of starvation, the campaign stresses.

“Nearly Rs 17000 crores were deposited by the members of the institution, in lieu of that only a relief package of Rs 5000 crores should be given, remaining amounts could be recovered by selling the properties of the society”, depositors show the way out.

“Nearly 4500 employees are starving due to the non-payment of wages. Nearly 5 lakh agents’ families are starving. Innocent employees and agents are being persecuted’, wails the posts.

”Our Prime Minister has emerged as the world’s number one leader due to Corona. The corona will be over in a few days, but we have been reduced to the status of marona (must die). We see a world leader in Modi and appeal to him to save us”.

Currently under liquidation, Adarsh depositors have preferred the role of Administrator who can get them their deposits sooner than later.

They demand that the Central registrar should order state and district level registrars to appoint administrators wherever Adarsh Credit Co-op Banks have failed. This way, at least the process of recovery would be put in place, they argue.

The tragedy is that even the recovery from those who took loans from the society has stopped. The money belongs to the general public numbering lakhs, who are condemned to penury. “Many people committed suicide, a few have suffered heart attack, someone’s marriage has broken up while someone could not pursue higher education, some even lost life without treatment”, the social media posts read.

In one such post, being tweeted and retweeted, the depositors say that “Since the interest rate of the banks has been reduced, people gravitate towards cooperative societies as they offer them high interest on their deposits.

They also say that even Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society had been giving good interest and employment to people for almost 20 years. Nearly 21 lakh people paid dividends at the rate of 16 percent. In the whole country, above 400 of its branches were working successfully.

“Justice received late is also an injustice. Please share it as much as possible and reach the Central Government”, goes on the campaign. Source: https://www.indiancooperative.com/

‘Killing of Irani scientist is insane, provocative and illegal’

Top US senator Bernie Sanders has strongly condemned the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a prominent Iranian physicist, saying that the murder is illegal and “an attempt to thwart the possibility of Iran’s negotiation with the new US administration.”

In a Twitter message on Saturday, Sanders said the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was insane, provocative and illegal.

“A new US administration is set to take power, and the assassination makes it clear that it is a move to thwart a possible diplomatic process between Iran and the United States,” he said.

However, we should not allow such incidents to happen at all. Not murder but the diplomatic way is the best way forward, Bernie Sanders added.

Meanwhile, John Bolton, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and national security adviser to US President Donald Trump, has backed the assassination of Iranian scientist Fakhrizadeh. He asserted that the killings are justified in order to thwart the possibility of Iran building an atomic bomb. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com/

Gunmen kill 34 people in west Ethiopia

  • Gunmen killed at least 34 people in a "gruesome" attack on a passenger bus in west Ethiopia, a part of the country that has recently seen a spate of deadly assaults on civilians, the national human rights body said Sunday.
  • The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said in a statement that "the estimated number of casualties, currently at 34, is likely to rise" from the attack which occurred Saturday night in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.
  • A spokesman for the commission, an independent government body, confirmed that the casualties were all deaths.
  • The EHRC statement said the bus attack occurred in the Debate administrative area, and that "there are reports of similar attacks" in three other areas, as well as "of persons who have fled to seek shelter".
  • Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government has provided scant information on recent violence in Benishangul-Gumuz, particularly in Metekel zone, where Debate is located.
  • Twelve people were killed in an attack in the zone in October, while 15 died in a similar attack in late September.Addressing lawmakers in October, Abiy said fighters responsible for the killings were receiving training and shelter in neighbouring Sudan and that Khartoum's assistance was needed to stabilise the area. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com

IC Exclusive: Adarsh Liquidator cannot act due to ED attachment

H S Patel, the man who is at the centre of attention of lakhs of depositors of the beleaguered Adarsh Credit Co-operative has talked to Indian Cooperative explaining the challenges being faced by him in doing justice to the job on hand-that is an amicable resolution of the dispute of Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society.

Because of account freezes and properties attached by several probe agencies, H S Patel, IAS (Retd.), who had been appointed as the liquidator in the beleaguered Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society finds himself helpless to pay back the money of gullible investors.

In a telephonic communication with Indian Cooperative correspondent Patel said, “I find difficulty in winding up of fraudulent Adarsh Credit Co-operative because Enforcement Directorate and other probe agencies have attached properties and frozen accounts of the society. Due to this I am unable to sell/auction properties to pay back the money of investors”, he added.

“Three months back I had written a letter to the concerned authorities including Central Registrar, Secretary of Ministry of Corporate affairs and others for releasing the attached properties but I am still waiting for the response from the authorities”, Patel said.

He further said when the government of India releases the attached properties only then can I act. Nothing can be done prior to this as I am helpless.

Earlier, in an interview given to one of the leading Hindi Daily newspapers, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar claimed that the liquidator is appointed and he is doing his work according to the rules and regulations. However, the reality on the ground is just the opposite: the liquidator finds himself helpless about paying back the money of investors.

It bears recall that last year in October, ED had attached the properties worth Rs 1,489 crore of Adarsh Credit Co-op Society.

Meanwhile, helpless depositors urged the central government to remove the liquidator and appoint a regulator to take care of the credit cooperative. They have also demanded an immediate relief package of Rs 5k crore.

Mukesh Modi the founder chairman of Adarsh Adarsh Credit Co-op and his family members are alleged to have run Ponzi schemes and floated several fake companies to which they diverted Rs 8400 crore.

Due to their mismanagement, gullible investors are forced to run from pillar to post to get back their hard-earned savings. They have also met Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and have also submitted a memorandum at PMO.

Beginning in Sirohi in Rajasthan, Adarsh Credit branched off to Haryana and Gujarat with its headquarters in Ahmedabad. More than seventy percent of investors are said to belong to Rajasthan.

https://www.naidunia.com/

A consortium purchased the apartments for €961 million - three years later, they were valued at double that amount.

According to the court, the winning bidders paid one per cent of the purchase price, €9.6 million, to ex-Freedom Party of Austria General Secretary Walter Meischberger and lobbyist Peter Hochegger, according to BBC report. Grasser became the youngest finance minister in Austria in 2000, at the age of 31, he, however, denied all the allegations and said he would appeal to the high court. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com/

Sebi may order forensic audit of Infosys over allegations: report

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is likely to order forensic audit of the books of Infosys as part of its investigation into whistleblower allegations of alleged financial irregularities at the company, a PTI report citing sources said.
  • The market regulator had initiated a probe into allegations of financial impropriety at Infosys, following whistleblower complaints that emerged last year.
  • Sebi’s decision comes after the internal audit committee of Infosys on 10 January concluded that the charges made by the whistleblowers were substantially without merit. The findings of the internal audit were shared with the regulator.
  • “The findings that it has come to is immaterial to Sebi’s probe. The regulator’s investigation so far has in fact warranted a deeper analysis. Sebi is in the process of appointing a forensic auditor for a thorough examination of the allegations of unethical practices," the report quoted one of the sources as saying.
  • The investigations follow a complaint by an anonymous whistleblowers to the company’s board alleging that chief executive Salil Parekh and the company’s chief financial officer indulged in “unethical practices" to boost revenue and profits. The whistleblower complaint, which was also sent to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on 30 September, became public on 21 October. Sebi took suo motu cognizance of the issue after the complaint became public.
  • Infosys CEO Salil Parekh, during a press conference to announce the company's third quarter results in Bengaluru, however, said an internal audit cleared Infosys of anomalies such as visa costs and large deals.
  • On 8 November, Sebi chairman Ajay Tyagi had indicated that its probe was independent of statements made by Infosys.
  • “The investors, if they want, can take comfort from Infosys’s statement, but our probe is still on. This is all I can tell you," Tyagi said, adding that people wishing to check Infosys’s financial figures should “ask God". This came after Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani defended the sanctity of the company’s numbers, saying even “god can’t change the numbers".
  • Sebi is also investigating a huge build-up of derivatives positions in the stock before allegations of accounting malpractices were made public.
  • Exchange data showed that huge put positions, or the option to sell shares at an agreed price on or before a particular date, were accumulated in the November series contracts of Infosys at a strike price of Rs740.
  • “In the prelim analysis, the regulator has found that these positions were fully hedged, making it difficult to pinpoint whether there was any insider trading," the report citing sources said.
  • Subsequently, Infosys told stock exchanges in October that it had referred the complaint to its audit committee.
  • Excerpts of the findings of the audit committee, which was assisted by law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and Co., and PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt. Ltd, were also made public along with the company’s fiscal third quarter earnings.
  • The committee gave a clean chit to the company on anomalies such as visa costs, large deals, reversal of certain provisions and non-disclosure of key information.
  • “The allegations regarding the visa costs are unsubstantiated. The costs incurred towards visas by the company are appropriately accounted for," the audit committee report said. “The allegations regarding large deal approvals are unsubstantiated. Large deals under the investigation team’s review were approved by the necessary stakeholders. In the case of one large deal, a post-facto approval was sought. The joint ventures were approved by the board and the audit committee. No evidence was found suggesting CEO’s involvement in bypassing the deal approval process or issuing any instructions in this concluded that no restatement of previously announced financial statements or other published financial information is warranted."
  • In the December quarter, Infosys reported its profit rose 23.5 per cent to Rs4,457 crore from a year earlier. Revenue rose 7.9 per cent to Rs23,092 crore. It also revised upwards its FY20 revenue outlook to 10-10.5% growth in constant currency. Source: https://www.domain-b.com/
