Urban Island Experiences unlock North American luxury traveller market with strategic offer designed for Canada

Canadian High Commissioner Eric Walsh, AOD /Urban Island Chairperson Linda Speldewinde and the first group of Urban Island Experiences North American tourists
From left: Hemas Holdings Plc Director Abbas Esufally, AOD /Urban Island Chairperson Linda Speldewinde and Canadian High Commissioner Eric Walsh
Travellers at the Colombo Innovation Tower, meeting AOD designers and alumniinaugural group completes two weeks of inspiringly curated and designed deeply experiential trip hailed by travellers as ‘a journey of a lifetime’ Well-thought-out entry point using Sri Lanka’s creative resources and agricultural and craft heritage to interest the Canadian travel market

When the Urban Island boutique was launched in the Canadian capital Toronto in the exclusive neighbourhood of Rosedale just over a year ago, it became the only dedicated ambassador of Sri Lankan design, creativity and craft in the city.

As customers flocked to purchase all-natural products handcrafted and designed in Sri Lanka, Linda Speldewinde—the entrepreneur behind Urban Island—saw an opportunity to offer something even more unique; to share our island in a refreshing manner and do something meaningful for its customers. She envisioned something that would be a trip for the travellers’ soul, uniquely designed through the Urban Island lens, and give back to Sri Lanka a manifold in the process. The product would strictly target the high-end luxury traveller with a focus on the North American market, which Linda had identified for Sri Lanka. A clear win-win.

As a materialisation of this thought process, in January 2024, Sri Lanka welcomed a group of Canadian travellers on an islandwide journey to make a first-hand connection with the source of their favourite handmade pieces purchased back in Toronto. Between visiting the emerald hills of Sri Lanka’s sprawling tea country, climbing the legendary wonder of Sigiriya, beach, jungle safaris and all the other delights that make visitors fall in love with Sri Lanka, the group was also able to experience the Mandaramnuwara village where they were welcomed into the lives of artisans and farmers who make and grow their products from using natural processes and materials. This unusual experience, which every single visitor highlighted as transformative or a ‘magic moment’, was what made their visit to Sri Lanka deeply meaningful.

“It was a journey of a lifetime,” said Diana Soloway, a businesswoman and Torontonian thoroughly moved by the experience.

Now, this group is returning to Canada, determined to tell more people why they should visit this remarkable little island rich with culture, nature, opportunities for a real human-to-human connection and witnessing a way of life that is slower and closer to nature.

Although this unusual travel offer evolved just within a year since Urban Island opened up in Toronto, it was long in the making. It stems from Urban Island Founder Linda Speldewinde’s 2021 post-COVID strategy for the group to switch up Sri Lanka’s travel narrative and be part of it . The strategy revolved around highlighting the island’s most authentic facets combining craft heritage and traditional agriculture that draws parallels to popular travel pursuits such as nature immersion and sustainable tourism. It is this vision that comes into fruition now, with a strategic focus on the North American travel market, especially the Canadian.

Sharing her views at the closing cocktails hosted at the Colombo Innovation Tower (CIT)—home to AOD and the design ecosystem that Urban Island is part of—Linda stated that the idea was to create a real connection between the travellers and what they experience, from the people they encounter to the places they visit.

“When they saw the products seen at the stores in Canada here in Sri Lanka, with the artisans who made them, in their village, within their homes…and to the artisans to realise that these are their customers was really something…the connection was obvious and everybody was deeply moved. Today at the CIT, they met the young AOD designers who designed those products and who are behind taking design to the village; again, the human-to-human connection here was very meaningful to all these travellers who are all entrepreneurs, professionals and business owners themselves. Our vision is not just to bring more travellers, but to bring in meaningful travel that helps people see the wealth of resources that Sri Lanka has while bringing them into first-hand contact with Sri Lankans who are building and evolving our heritage like the artisans in the village and triggering new cultural movements like the AOD students in Colombo. This is the first time we did it, and this is something really special that we want to share with the world. This is not regular travel; this is a trip for your soul.”

At this event bidding farewell to the group of Canadian visitors who travelled through Sri Lanka with Urban Island, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Eric Walsh, was optimistic.

He commented on the significance of building person-to-person connections and Urban Island’s offer as an example of building Sri Lanka as a meaningful destination in the eyes of the Canadian travel market. “For people in Canada who purchase Urban Island products to not just see where the products are from, but even meet the people who designed and wove their products…isn’t that an amazing experience, in this globalised world, to have those personal connections? This to me is a wonderful example.”

Speaking at the gathering, special invitee, Hemas Holdings Plc Director Abbas Esufally commented recognising the potential of this market and its high-spending consumers. “It’s not a volume market, but a high-yielding one. They’re the kind of travellers we want to bring here,” he said.

Being a travel industry veteran, Esufally is also familiar with what Sri Lanka needs to address to attract the North American travel market. “Yes, the distance is a bit of a setback when it comes to this market, but it’s not a hurdle if it is done like what Urban Island has done by strategically combining with neighbouring destinations, like the Maldives for example, for this trip. We have to offer them more attractive combinations of experiences and place ourselves as part of bigger world tours, that make it worthwhile.”

Urban Island Experiences aims to present a fresh, and unique reflection of Sri Lanka through a ‘design thinking’ lens that successfully combines its traditional lifestyles, values and ingenuity reflected in heritage crafts and small-scale farming practices that accurately capture the lives lived by most Sri Lankans as much as those portrayed by more popular narratives involving ayurveda, historical locations, jungles and beaches.

By the reactions of the first group of travellers from this initiative, Urban Island Experiences got it absolutely right and is on its way to planning the next groups of travellers to the island.

Dana Zosky, businesswoman, Toronto: “It is the most magical and the most beautiful country in the world. When I thought about the journey to get here, it didn’t intimidate me because, you know, a lot of people from Canada travel to Australia or New Zealand or Africa or Asia, and it’s a little different. It’s an easy place to get to from Canada, so that should not be a deterrent. And it’s a beautiful little island that offers so much.”

Beth Bynoe, entrepreneur, British Columbia: “It was a special experience; we went into multiple villages where local artisans produce beautiful handcrafted items at the cottage industry level. Seeing women working from their homes, women being able to help families and work in their own time where they have available help… I’ll probably come back and see what the northern half of the island has to offer.”

Natalie Witkin, businesswoman, Toronto: “The beauty of Sri Lanka is the variety of experiences that I’ve had here. The animals, safari…the beautiful countryside, the vibrant city. The beautiful people—you are so kind and always smiling, and teach us so much. We were blessed when we got to meet local people and have that experience seeing how they work and live, feeling life, appreciating life, and the beauty that they’re surrounding.” Urban Island Experiences unlock North American luxury traveller market with strategic offer designed for Canada | Daily FT

UK decommissioning research partnership begins to bear fruit

(Image: NDA-NDC)

A research partnership between the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and National Decommissioning Centre (NDC), formed in 2022, is already helping the energy sector to reduce costs and emissions, improve environmental outcomes and deliver sustainable net-zero decommissioning.

The NDC - based near Aberdeen, Scotland - is a GBP38 million (USD48 million) partnership between the University of Aberdeen, Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) and industry. NZTC develops and deploys technology to accelerate an affordable net-zero energy industry. Founded in 2017, the centre was created as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal, with GBP180 million of UK and Scottish government funding.

In September 2022, the NDA and NDC signed a three-year collaborative research agreement - the first of its kind between the nuclear and oil and gas decommissioning sectors. The partnership, supporting research with a potential value of up to GBP900,000, sees the NDA work with researchers from the University of Aberdeen in areas of mutual interest to both the nuclear and oil and gas sectors.

The agreement built on three years of discussions involving the NDA, the NDC, Net Zero Technology Centre, regulators including the North Sea Transition Authority, and industry bodies, which sought to identify mutually beneficial opportunities through the insights and lessons learned from each sector.

Among the areas identified for joint research are the development of AI-based techniques to support risk management, sharing new technology development, analysing impact on the economy and environment and finding environmentally safe alternatives to cement.

Both nuclear and oil and gas decommissioning require the cutting of structures underwater. The NDC is developing an underwater laser cutter for oil and gas decommissioning and one partnership project delivered a review on the applicability of this to nuclear decommissioning.

In addition, an AI-enabled risk live dashboard has been developed for monitoring real-time global news to evaluate how international events can impact the nuclear industry in the short or long-term. It will be used to help risk analysts in their day-to-day jobs by scanning vast amounts of information quickly, allowing more time to identify, consider and respond to potential risks.

The partnership is also undertaking an economic impact study looking at the socioeconomic benefits of decommissioning at a local and national level and the possible impacts and benefits for associated communities. Analysis shows decommissioning activity has the potential to deliver economy-wide gains in key areas such as skills, employment, and household income, which in turn boost household consumption. The study will support stakeholder engagement helping to inform politicians and policy makers on key opportunities and enable discussions around support for skills, training and economic development to back decommissioning activities.

"We are tasked with decommissioning the UK's oldest nuclear sites safely, securely, sustainably and cost effectively," said Heather Barton, Interim Environment, Health and Safety Director, who coordinates the partnership on behalf of the NDA. "The real strength in the partnership is that there are numerous areas where we can collaborate to help us achieve this. It has been a resounding success since it was launched with several key outcomes already achieved including providing impartial insights to regulators, government, stakeholders, and advisory groups. By utilising technology and innovation, we can create a safer working environment for our employees, return our sites to communities for reuse earlier, and leave a more sustainable legacy for generations to come."

"Bringing the NDC and NDA together has allowed for collaboration in new ways to achieve our joint goals of delivering safe, efficient and sustainable decommissioning," added Sergi Arnau, Project Delivery Manager at the NDC. "The NDC has a culture of innovation in research and development and we are looking forward to continuing to successfully harness the skills and capabilities available through the partnership to deliver vital work with the NDA.

"For year 3 of the partnership and beyond, a project to enhance the autonomous capabilities of underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) used during the inspection and maintenance of nuclear ponds is envisaged. Furthermore, the expertise gathered from years of oil and gas drilling exploration will prove beneficial in the development of an underground storage facility for radioactive waste disposal."Researched and written by World Nuclear News UK decommissioning research partnership begins to bear fruit : Waste & Recycling - World Nuclear News

Samsung launches world's first foldable glass phone, Galaxy Z Flip

  • Samsung on Wednesday launched its second foldable phone and the world's first foldable glass phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, which redefines smart phone with a pioneering a new mobile category.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip, the company’s latest futuristic flagship, features a first-of-its-kind foldable glass display that allows the user to capture, share and experience content.
  • “When folded, the Galaxy Z Flip is a stylish and compact palm-sized device. When unfolded, it’s a full-sized phone whose stunning, 6.7-inch Infinity Flex Display –Samsung’s first to feature a 21.9:9 aspect ratio – offers users truly seamless multitasking, a company website release stated.
  • The key highlight of Galaxy Z Flip is its bendable glass as it is for the first time that a brand has used thin bendable glass in a phone. The Galaxy is also the first foldable phone from Samsung to feature a clamshell design.
  • The device takes on the new Moto Razr foldable phone and will bring back memories of style associated with flip phones. For the first time in mobile phones, Samsung has used thin glass over a flexible display.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip features Samsung’s proprietary bendable Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). This glass layer makes the device look sturdy and the screen less delicate. Also, repairing the display becomes easier as for deep scratches, just changing the glass layer instead of the entire display will do.
  • The thin glass layer in Galaxy Z Flip prevents the crease from appearing more prominent. Like in the Galaxy Fold, the plastic screen tends to develop a crease at the place where it folds giving an ugly look. Having a glass layer on the screen prevents this crease (due to the fold) from appearing more prominent.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes with a 6.7-inch screen which folds in almost half. It also features a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display with an aspect ratio of 21.9:9 and pixel density of 425 ppi.
  • There is a small cover display with which you can change music, click selfies when the Galaxy Z Flip is folded
  • There is a small cover display on the outside which measures 1.06-inch. You can use that small touch display to change music, click selfies when the Galaxy Z Flip is folded. You can get notifications as well on the cover display when the device is folded.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip can stay open at different angles like a laptop screen.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip can stay open at a range of angles, like a laptop screen using the Hideaway Hinge system. There’s a new sweeper technology, which uses nylon fibers crafted by micro-height-cutting technology to repel dirt and dust.
  • Samsung has worked with Google to design a new Flex mode for the phone. When the device is free-standing, the display automatically splits into two 4-inch screens so you can easily view images, content or videos on the top half of the display, and control them on the bottom half. For example, you can watch and navigate YouTube – stream on the top while searching for other videos, reading descriptions and writing comments on the bottom.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage and runs Android 10-based OneUI interface with backing from a 3,300mAh battery.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes with a total of three cameras
  • The main display comes with a punch hole notch which hides the 10MP selfie camera. On the outside, there is a dual camera setup with a 12MP ultra wide sensor with F2.2 aperture and a 12MP wide-angle primary camera with F1.8 aperture, OIS, up to 8X digital zoom.
  • The device can also be folded to 90-degrees and placed on a table to shoot videos or photos.
  • The device comes with a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the side. There is no headphone jack and Samsung is providing USB Type-C earphones inside the box.Galaxy Z Flip is likely to be priced lower than Samsung’s first folding phone Galaxy Fold in India, although there is no official launch date yet. The device is priced at $1,380 in the US and is expected to cost less than Rs1,00,000 in India at that rate. Source: https://www.domain-b.com/

Apple launches new fix for unexpected shutdown of some iPhone6S models

A new repair programme, the second that Apple has launched this week, is targeted at ''a very small number'' of iPhone 6S models that had been unexpectedly shutting down. Phones affected by the issue, said to be only devices that were manufactured between September and October last year, would be eligible for a free battery replacement.

Users who think their phone was affected by the problem, would need to check for a corresponding serial number on their device at an Apple Store or with an Apple-authorised service provider, carriers that offered the iPhone 6S would not be handing out battery replacements.

According to Apple, iPhone 6S owners would need to back up their data, erase settings, and turn off Find my iPhone. The company added problems like cracked screens would not be fixed as part of the new repair service, and unexpected shutdowns on devices manufactured before or after the specific window would not fetch them a free battery replacement. However, users who had already paid for a new battery because they suffered from random reboots, and had a phone manufactured between September and October 2015, would be able to get a refund on that.

Just three days ago, Apple launched a repair programme for iPhone 6 Plus owners whose devices were experiencing a so-called "Touch Disease" where users may see display flickering or a loss of touch sensitivity. That programme carried a $149 repair fee, as Apple said the issue was caused at least in part by the device having been "dropped multiple times on a hard surface."Source: domain-b.com

South Korea’s first military satellite launched

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the ANASIS-II satellite blasting off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. South Korea’s first ever military communications satellite was launched by private operator SpaceX, Seoul’s defence procurement agency said.

AFP/Seoul: South Korea’s first-ever military communications satellite has been successfully launched by private operator SpaceX, Seoul said yesterday, as it looks to build up its defence capabilities. The ANASIS-II is intended to enhance the South’s ability to defend itself against the nuclear-armed North, which invaded in 1950.
A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the satellite blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, Seoul’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said in a statement. SpaceX confirmed the satellite deployed about 32 minutes after lift-off, on Monday afternoon local time.
DAPA said the launch made South Korea the 10th country in the world to own a military-only communications satellite, which will provide “permanent and secured military communications”.
The satellite is expected to reach its orbit of 36,000km in two weeks and South Korea’s military will take over the system in October after testing, it added. Seoul is looking to enhance its military capabilities as it pushes to end an arrangement under which, if war breaks out, American commanders will have authority over their combined forces.
The satellite was “expected to improve the South Korean military’s independent operational capabilities”, an official at its defence ministry told Yonhap news agency. Seoul and Washington are security allies and the US stations 28,500 troops in the country. But their relationship has been strained in recent years, triggered by differences in their approaches to Pyongyang, and over cost-sharing responsibilities.Source: https://www.gulf-times.com

Samsung launches world's first foldable glass phone, Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung on Wednesday launched its second foldable phone and the world's first foldable glass phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, which redefines smart phone with a pioneering a new mobile category.
There is no headphone jack and Samsung is providing USB Type-C earphones inside the box.
  • Galaxy Z Flip is likely to be priced lower than Samsung’s first folding phone Galaxy Fold in India, although there is no official launch date yet. The device is priced at $1,380 in the US and is expected to cost less than Rs1,00,000 in India at that rate.Source: https://www.domain-b.com

Samsung Electronics to launch 500 billion won fund to help small suppliers

  • Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will launch a 500 billion won ($445 million) fund to help small suppliers. The move from the highest-profile South Korean firm follows calls by new president Moon Jae-in to protect small businesses.
  • Moon who came to power this month has promised to rein in the family-owned conglomerates that dominate the country's economy. Moon, who calls himself 'jobs president', added that he wanted to discourage contract jobs, increase the minimum wage and cut working hours.
  • The company said the fund will allow its suppliers to borrow cash interest-free for a year to allow suppliers' subcontractors to be paid promptly. The fund will run until 20 May.
  • Samsung said in a statement that it decided to establish the fund after meetings with suppliers late last year.
  • In another initiative on the lines, the nation's largest agricultural cooperative said it will consider making 5,245 temporary workers regular employees.
  • The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation has a workforce of 35,000 full-time and part-time workers at dozens of affiliate companies, including a bank and a hypermarket chain.
  • Also, SK Broadband Co Ltd, an affiliate of South Korea's largest telecom firm SK Telecom, plans to set up a service subsidiary that will make 5,200 workers, currently on contract, regular employees, Yonhap news agency said on Tuesday citing the company.
  • The new initiative will put an end to payments in promissory notes that had often led to slow circulation of funds for second-tier suppliers.
  • Samsung Electronics plans to manage the fund for three years until May 2020 to ensure settlement of payments in cash in 30 days. Samsung has plans to consider extending the fund operation upon request from suppliers.
  • According to an unnamed official from Samsung Electronics, cash payment was not mandatory, but the company will do its best to encourage its suppliers to take part in the new initiative to the extent they can, Pulse reported. Source: https://www.domain-b.com

Isro launches 6 Singaporean satellites on PSLV platform

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) today launched six Singaporean satellites with its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle's core alone (PSLV-CA) variant. The PSLV rocket - standing 44.4 metres tall and weighing around 227 tonnes - took off on Wednesday from the rocket port in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, around 80 km from Chennai. Apart from launching the six foreign satellites, Isro also tested the rocket's fourth stage / engine's ability to restart after it was cut off around 17 minutes into the flight. India was testing a multiple burn fuel stage/rocket engine for the first time."The restart and shut off of the fourth stage engine is done as a first step towards launching multiple satellites but in different orbits," an Isro official said. Launching of multiple satellites with a single rocket is nothing new for Isro s it has been doing that for several years. The challenge is, however, to launch several satellites at different orbits with one rocket. This is what Isro plans to test when the PSLV ejects the six Singaporean satellites. The PSLV rocket is a four-stage / engine rocket powered by solid and liquid fuel alternatively. "Restarting a rocket engine soon after it is shut off is a critical technology that has to be mastered. Once a rocket engine is activated, then the heat
generated is very high. The trick is to cool it down in space and to restart it after a short gap," an industry expert told IANS. "This is entirely different from switching on and off the communication satellite's engines in space. The interval between two restarts of a communication satellite engine will be in days. But in the case of restarting a rocket engine, the time gap will be in hours," the expert added. "By that time the rocket's engine has to be cooled down. This part of the experiment is very critical," he explained. The PSLV's fourth-stage / engine will be restarted just over 67 minutes into the flight or 50 minutes after the engine was cut off. At the time of restart, the fourth-stage will be in a lower altitude of 523.9km while the satellites would have been ejected at 550 km altitude. The engine will be operated for four seconds and is planned to go up to an altitude of 524 km before it is cut off again. On 16 December, Isro will be flying the 'core alone' variant of the PSLV rocket. The rocket will not have the strap-on boosters, its standard feature. This will be Isro's last mission for 2015. The successful launch of the six Singaporean satellites will take Isro's total flights of foreign satellites to 57. Out of the six satellites, the 400 kg earth observation satellite called TeLEOS-1 is the main passenger for the PSLV rocket and hence the mission is called TeLEOS mission by Isro. TeLEOS-1 is Singapore's first commercial earth observation satellite designed and developed by ST Electronics. The other five co-passenger satellites are VELOX-C1 (123 kg), VELOX-II (13 kg), Kent Ridge-1 (78 kg), Galassia (3.4 kg) and Athenoxat-1. So far in 2015, Isro has launched 14 satellites (three Indian and 11 foreign) from its rocket port in Sriharikota. Thirteen satellites were launched with PSLV rocket and one communication satellite - GSAT-6 - with geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV). Last month, India also launched its communication satellite GSAT-15 using the Ariane rocket of the European space agency which takes the total number of satellite launches in 2015 to 21 (17 foreign, four Indian). Festive launches see Maruti sales jump 24% in Oct

Maruti ERTIGA
Market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd today announced a 24-per cent jump in sales for October to a record 121,063 units over last year, driven by new launches and the start of the festive season. The volumes were led by robust growth in compact car models, including Swift, Ritz, Celerio, Dzire and the recently launched Baleno. Combined sales of these models went up 37.7 per cent to 51,048 units over a year ago. The company has received bookings for close to 10,000 units of Baleno, said the company spokesperson. The spokesperson also attributed the strong sales during the month to higher despatches to dealerships ahead of Diwali. On the back of an aggressive sales push by the company during the festivals of Navratra and Dussehra, sales of entry-level models, including the Wagon R and Alto, too increased 5.2 per cent to 37,595 units over a year ago. Domestic sales of utility vehicles also increased 56.5 per cent to 9,435 units. These included the Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga models. Sales of mid-size sedans, including the SX4 and the recently launched S-Cross models, however dropped 7.2 per cent to 5,890 units over last year, following tepid response to the S-Cross. Albeit on a low base, exports during the month jumped 90 per cent to 13,146 units as the company was able to resolve shipment-related issues, said the spokesperson. Car sales have been buoyed by new models and the festive season which started with Ganesh Chaturthi on 17 September. Benign fuel prices coupled with an interest cut also helped sentiment.
