FEB 07, 2023 Indian-American schoolgirl Natasha Perianayagam was named in the "world's brightest" students list for the second consecutive year by the US-based Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth, based on the results of above-grade-level tests of over 15,000 students across 76 countries. Perianayagam, 13, is a student at Florence M Gaudineer Middle School, in New Jersey. She also took the Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth (CTY) test in Spring 2021, when she was a Grade 5 student. Her results in the verbal and quantitative sections levelled with the 90th percentile of advanced Grade 8 performance, which catapulted her into the honours list that year. This year, she was honoured for her exceptional performance on the SAT, ACT, School and College Ability Test, or similar assessment taken as part of the CTY Talent Search, the university said in a press release on Monday. Perianayagam, whose parents hail from Chennai, said she loves doodling and reading JRR Tolkien's novels in her spare time. CTY used above-grade-level testing to identify advanced students from around the world and provide a clear picture of their academic abilities. According to the university release, Perianayagam was among the 15,300 students from 76 countries who joined CTY in the 2021-22 Talent Search year. Less than 27 per cent of those participants qualified for the CTY ceremony, receiving either high or grand honours based on their test scores. In her latest attempt, Perianayagam scored the highest grades among all candidates. "This is not just recognition of our students' success on one test, but a salute to their love of discovery and learning, and all the knowledge they have accumulated in their young lives so far," said CTY's executive director Dr. Amy Shelton. "It is exciting to think about all the ways in which they will use that potential to discover their passions, engage in rewarding and enriching experiences, and achieve remarkable things in their communities and in the world," she added. Who is Nobel Peace Laureate Ales Bialiatski?

Ales Bialiatski is a prominent Belarusian human rights activist, who is currently being held in prison without trial.

Bialiatski, 60, is the founder of the country's Viasna (Spring) Human Rights Centre, which was set up in 1996 in response to a brutal crackdown on street protests by Belarus's authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Viasna provided support for the jailed demonstrators and their families, documenting the use of torture against political prisoners by the Belarus authorities.

"He has devoted his life to promoting democracy and peaceful development in his home country," said the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, announcing this year's three Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Bialiatski - who has received numerous international human rights awards - spent three years in jail after being convicted on tax evasion charges he has always denied in 2011. He was released in 2014.

He was detained again in 2021 following massive street protests over what opposition activists say were rigged elections that kept Mr. Lukashenko in power.

"Government authorities have repeatedly sought to silence Ales Bialiatski," Ms. Reiss-Andersen said.

"Despite tremendous personal hardship, Mr. Bialiatski has not yielded an inch in his fight for human rights and democracy in Belarus," she added.

Just before his arrest two years ago, Mr. Bialiatski wrote on his Facebook page that the Belarusian authorities "are acting as a regime of occupation".

"Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators across all of Belarus, and hundreds [of them are] detained."

Mr. Bialiatski's current health is not known.

The activist's wife, Natallia Pinchuk, said she was "overwhelmed with emotion".

"I express my deep gratitude to the Nobel committee and the international community for recognizing the work of Ales, his colleagues, and his organization," she told the AFP news agency,

Mr. Lukashenko - described in the West as Europe's last dictator - has ruled Belarus with an iron fist since 1994.

He has been allowing Russian President Vladimir Putin, his close ally, to use Belarus's territory to launch deadly missile attacks on Ukraine and to send Russian ground troops and armory there since Moscow's invasion began on 24 February.

Alongside, Mr. Bialiatski, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties (CCL) is one of the three joint winners of this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

CCL is one of Ukraine's leading human rights organizations. It was founded in 2007 when leaders of human rights groups from nine post-Soviet countries decided to create a cross-border resource support center in Kyiv.

Since its founding, the CGS has monitored political persecutions in occupied Crimea, Ukraine's southern peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014; documented war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region; and organized international campaigns to release the Kremlin's political prisoners.

After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, CCL has engaged in efforts to identify and document Russian war crimes against the Ukrainian civilian population.

In a tweet after Friday's announcement, CCL said it was "proud to be awarded" the Nobel Peace Prize.DailyBangladesh/SA Who is Nobel Peace Laureate Ales Bialiatski?

The Northeastern University Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service honoured him as its inaugural Global Citizenship Ambassador last week, according to a statement issued on Monday. "We are grateful to Sri Sri. We can think of no better way to launch our Global Citizenship Ambassador recognition than to dialogue and learn from a joyful humanitarian who embodies the best of our shared human values," said Alexander Levering Kern, executive director and Lead Spiritual Advisor (chaplain) at the university. The university is a global leader in experiential education and research with campuses around the world and is home to students from over 100 countries. It is ranked among the top 50 in the US and has one of the three largest international student populations. "On behalf of the interfaith community at Northeastern, in Boston and beyond, we look forward to working together to nurture global citizens and to build more just, peaceful, and healthy world for all people," Kern said. Sri Ravi Shankar has fostered peace by way of dialogue and strategic initiatives that engage multiple levels of government, business and humanitarian organisations, the statement said. He has lead conflict resolution and trauma-relief programmes in many countries, including Afghanistan, Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel-Palestine, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Mauritius, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United States of America. "The first thing in a conflict is a communication breakdown. Second, there is a trust deficit. If we can bridge these somehow, then the process begins. Inside every culprit is a victim crying for help. If you heal the victim, the culprit disappears," the Indian spiritual leader said. Copyright © Jammu Links News, Source: Jammu Links News

Actor Sonu Sood tops UK's 2020 celebrity list for charitable efforts during pandemic

DEC 09, 2020 LONDON: Indian actor Sonu Sood has been named the number one South Asian celebrity in the world for his philanthropic efforts during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, in a first-of-its-kind ranking released in London on Wednesday. The 47-year-old Bollywood star beat off tough global competition to top the ''50 Asian Celebrities in The World'' list, which is published by UK-based weekly newspaper ''Eastern Eye''. It celebrates artists who made a positive impact with their actions or were inspiring in their own unique way and involved public input, with several social media posts collated for nominations. "As the pandemic broke, I realised it was my duty to help my countrymen; it was an instinct that came from within," said Sood, expressing his gratitude for the honour, which recognised his far-reaching efforts at transporting and helping Indian migrant workers during the COVID-19 lockdown. "Eventually, this was something I came to Mumbai for. It was my responsibility as an Indian, which I did. I think all the love of the people which I received was simply their wishes and prayers. Once again, I won''t stop till my last breath," said Sood, who is behind box-office hits such as ''Dabangg'' and ''Simmba''. ''Eastern Eye'' entertainment editor Asjad Nazir compiled the list. He said Sood was a deserving winner because no celebrity did as much to help others during lockdown. "What started off with the big-hearted Bollywood star helping impoverished migrant workers stranded by lockdown get back home, evolved into a spectacularly philanthropic mission that made a difference to so many during the pandemic," said Nazir. "Whether it was paying for surgeries, donating food, setting up scholarships, campaigning for women''s rights, or buying a new tractor for a farmer so his daughters could study and not plough a field, super Sonu helped in countless ways in 2020. He fully deserves the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," he said. Canadian YouTuber, social media star, comedian and TV personality Lilly Singh came in second for her "pathbreaking journey, remarkable output and entertaining audiences most when they needed it". Half-Indian British pop superstar, Charli XCX, was third for creating her masterpiece Mercury Music Prize nominated album ‘How I Am Feeling Now' entirely during lockdown and British Indian actor Dev Patel was fourth for his glass-ceiling shattering, colour-blind lead roles in ''The Personal History of David Copperfield'' and ''The Green Knight''. Indian singer Armaan Malik came in fifth for his immense musical output that included barrier-breaking English language songs. Sixth-placed Priyanka Chopra Jonas remains the most famous Indian star in the world, while the rest of the top 10 includes pan-Indian star Prabhas (7), Hollywood power player Mindy Kaling (8), highest-placed Indian TV star Surbhi Chandna (9) and Pakistan-born Hollywood heavyweight Kumail Nanjiani (10). "Whether it was philanthropy, breaking boundaries, inspiring others, trending across social media, crossing new frontiers, creating really great work or inspiring a new generation, many South Asian stars shone brightly and became beacons of hope, during a crushing year when it was needed more than ever. They are celebrated in this list," added Nazir. The youngest in the list is 18-year-old Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (22), who starred in the successful Netflix series ''Never Have I Ever''. The oldest is 78-year-old Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan (20), who once again did great work on film and television, helped humanitarian causes, beat COVID-19 after contracting it. The highest-placed author is the Booker Prize nominated Avni Doshi (31). Copyright © Jammu Links News,  Source: Jammu Links News

Diver Shiva saved over 100 lives

  • Indian diver Shiva helped police find bodies in Hussain Sagar lake in the country's southern city of Hyderabad for years. And then one day, he stopped someone before they jumped, saving a life for the first time. BBC Telugu's Balla Satish reports.
  • Shiva, who uses only one name, says he was about 10 years old when he came across a group of policemen who were offering to pay anyone who would bring a body out of a nearby pond.
  • Many police in India are poorly trained and don't know how to swim and are not given funds to hire professional divers. So it's not uncommon for them to rely on such informal, even risky, arrangements.
  • But when Shiva volunteered, he says, they were taken aback. "They initially refused saying I was too young. But I convinced them," he recalls.
  • He did the job and walked away with 40 rupees, now worth about $0.54 or £0.42 but a decent sum for him at the time.
  • That was 20 years ago. He is now 30 and still helping the local police.
  • Shiva lives right by Hussain Sagar, a large artificial lake in the heart of the city. The lake, a popular tourist spot, is also used during the Ganesha festival for immersing idols of the Hindu deity.
  • The statues disintegrate under water and Shiva fishes out the iron rods they are made of to sell to recyclers.
  • But the lake is also a place where many come to die and Shiva often helps police retrieve bodies out of the water. Sometimes, he also helps them recover bodies from other rivers and lakes in the city.
  • Shiva does more than pulling bodies out of the lake - he often saves people before they jump into the water, and sometimes even after that.
  • "I have lost count of how many bodies I have found. But I have saved 114 lives," he told the BBC.
  • He is now also training his wife to swim so she can help retrieve bodies of women.
  • Inspector B Dhanalakshmi, who's posted at the police station near Hussain Sagar lake, acknowledges that Shiva has been "a huge help" to them.
  • "I can't confirm how many people he has saved over the years, but I believe it's more than 100," she told the BBC. Suicide is still a crime in India and many people Shiva saves run away even before he can call the police.
  • Shiva says he never knew his parents and spent most of his childhood on the streets, with brief spells in orphanages. At some point - he can't be sure how old he was - he started living with a woman and her children who were also homeless. He grew close to them and it was one of her sons who taught him how to swim, a skill that changed the course of his life.
  • "I have lost a lot of friends over the years - to addictions, to disease, to hunger, to accidents," he says. The boy who taught him to swim - "my brother Lakshman," he calls him - accidentally drowned and another close friend died while trying to save someone else.
  • He says because he couldn't save them, he's trying to make up for that by saving others.
  • Saving lives brings him some extra money - sometimes people he saves pay him as a token of their gratitude. And coverage in the local press has turned him into a minor celebrity and fetched him small roles in Telugu films. But Shiva says he doesn't consider saving lives a job.
  • People's motives for suicide, he says, vary - from exam pressures to love affairs gone wrong to family feuds and financial woes. He says sometimes the elderly try to kill themselves when they are abandoned by their children.
  • Recently, he says he saw a man jump into the lake, fearing he might have contracted the coronavirus. The man's friend then jumped in to save him and Shiva too jumped in, but he was only able to save the friend. He says the dead man's family members didn't even take the body, afraid of catching the virus.
  • "So I cremated him," he says. "I saved another man who said his family had begun to neglect him since they thought he had the virus."
  • But his work comes at a cost - Hussain Sagar is heavily polluted and Shiva, who dives into the water regularly with no gear or suit, says he has developed skin rashes and caught other ailments, including a bout of typhoid.
  • "There is no time to put on any gear. You have to react fast. If you see someone jump, you have to jump right away."
  • The lake also smells foul during the summer and snakes are commonly found on its shores, but Shiva has no plans to move on. "I want to stay here," he says. "Only if I stay here, I can save lives. The satisfaction of saving a life is supreme." Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com
